Posting on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Alfred Kumi published a direct message titled “Allow the Party to Grow: A Direct Message to President Akufo-Addo.” In the heartfelt but firm note, he reminded the former President that true leadership sometimes demands restraint rather than action.
Quoting Ecclesiastes 3:1, Kumi wrote, “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven,” emphasizing that the party now needs space to breathe, heal, and renew after the 2024 electoral defeat.
Drawing a powerful comparison with former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s conduct after leaving office in 2008, Kumi praised Kufuor for allowing the NPP to grow beyond him. “He didn’t go about parading or babysitting NPP NEC meetings,” Kumi stated, highlighting that Kufuor stayed away from daily party affairs and only offered counsel when called upon.
According to Kumi, the continued visible involvement of President Akufo-Addo in party activities risks stifling the rise of new leaders. “Today, Mr. President, many of us, especially the youth, feel that our river is stagnating,” he wrote.
“The greatest gift you can give us now is your quietness.”
Kumi stressed that his call was not an act of disrespect, but a plea born out of loyalty and a genuine desire to see the NPP thrive once again. He invoked an African proverb: “When the elders sit quietly at home, the young warriors fight more bravely,” to underscore the need for generational renewal.
The message, which has begun circulating widely online, concludes with a passionate appeal to President Akufo-Addo to step back with honour, bless the party with his silence, and allow the next generation to lead the way forward.
“We honour you. We thank you. But it is time,” Kumi wrote, signing off as a loyal member of the New Patriotic Party.
His post has ignited discussion among party faithful and political watchers, sparking broader conversations about leadership transition, renewal, and the future direction of the NPP.

Mr. President,
There is a time for leading from the front, and a time for leading by stepping aside.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us: “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose… pic.twitter.com/XqMfVfJBAB
