A powerful coalition of political parties has announced a nationwide protest set for Monday, May 5, 2025, in what they describe as a bold stand to defend Ghana’s democracy.

The protest follows widespread outrage over the suspension of the Chief Justice and the abrupt termination of several public officials moves the coalition labels as a direct assault on the nation's constitutional integrity.

The coalition, comprising the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), issued a strong statement after an emergency meeting on April 24. They warned that Ghana’s constitutional order is under unprecedented attack and called for a unified, non-partisan response from citizens, civil society, and religious organizations.

Jerry Owusu Appau, General Secretary of LPG, accused President John Mahama of engineering a political takeover aimed at securing an unconstitutional third term. "We will not sit idle while political ambition tramples the foundation of our republic," he asserted.

He further warned that Mahama's alleged efforts to remove independent officials including the Chief Justice and Electoral Commission Chair are part of a broader strategy to tilt the 2028 elections.

"The judiciary must remain free from political pressure. The Chief Justice deserves to work without interference," Owusu stressed.

Calling for vigilance, the coalition urged all Ghanaians to rise against any move that seeks to compromise the independence of democratic institutions and to protect the hard-earned freedoms of the Fourth Republic.
