The highly anticipated One-eighth Stage of the 2024 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) began with a thrilling contest between Tamale Senior High School (Tamale SHS), Benkum Senior High School, and Chemu Senior High School. The "Lions" from Tamale SHS roared to victory, finishing with 46 points and securing their place in the Quarter-final Stage.
The competition started with a warm introduction by Quiz Mistress, Dr. Anita Oppong, who asked the teams about their expectations. Benkum SHS, full of faith, confidently stated, "We’re here by the grace of God." Tamale SHS, eager to make a statement, responded, "Insha Allah, we will make a name for ourselves." Chemu SHS, reflecting on their journey, humbly thanked Allah for bringing them this far.
Round One saw a close contest between Tamale SHS and Benkum SHS, both ending with 13 points each. Chemu SHS, however, struggled, managing only two points.
In Round Two, the 'Prudential Life Speed Race,' the competition began to shift. Tamale SHS moved ahead with 23 points, while Benkum SHS faltered, dropping to 7 points after several incorrect answers. Chemu SHS managed to advance slightly, ending the round with 4 points.
The Problem of the Day, a challenging mathematics question, proved difficult for Benkum SHS, who failed to score any points. Tamale SHS and Chemu SHS both earned 4 points for partial solutions, boosting their totals.
Benkum SHS mounted a spirited comeback in the 'Jupay Money Transfer True or False Round,' answering all questions correctly and earning an impressive 16 points. However, Tamale SHS maintained their lead, adding 13 points to their score, while Chemu SHS earned 10 points but still lagged behind.
As the contest drew to a close, Tamale SHS secured victory with 46 points, advancing to the Quarter-finals. Benkum SHS finished with 30 points, and Chemu SHS with 18 points. Despite their defeat, both Benkum SHS and Chemu SHS can take pride in their performance throughout the competition.
