In a historic development for the Catholic Church, American cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new pope, making him the first American to ascend to the papacy. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, after white smoke was seen billowing from the Sistine Chapel—signalling that the cardinals gathered in conclave had reached a decision.

The 133 voting cardinals, who were sequestered inside the Vatican for the election process, selected Prevost after two days of deliberations. According to Church procedures, a two-thirds majority is required to elect a new pope.

Who is Robert Prevost?

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in the United States, is a former bishop and cardinal known for his humility, leadership, and pastoral work. Before his election, he served in various roles within the Vatican, including the Prefect for the Dicastery of Bishops. His experience and commitment to reform reportedly won him favour among the cardinals.

He becomes the 267th pope in the history of the Catholic Church and succeeds Pope Francis, whose retirement due to health reasons created the vacancy.

Historic moment for Catholics around the world

The election of an American as pope is unprecedented and signals a shift in the direction of the Church’s global leadership. Many observers say Pope Leo XIV’s election may represent a new era of inclusivity and global representation within the Catholic hierarchy.

In Ghana and across Africa, the news has been met with interest and hope. The Catholic Church continues to grow on the continent, with many faithful looking forward to how the new pope will engage with African churches and communities.

What happens next?

Pope Leo XIV will soon be formally inaugurated at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The date for the papal inauguration is yet to be announced.

Global leaders and Catholic faithful across the world have already started sending congratulatory messages and prayers as the Church begins this new chapter under Pope Leo XIV.

Background: How Popes Are Elected

The papal conclave is a centuries-old tradition where cardinals gather in strict secrecy to elect a new pope. During this time, they remain cut off from the outside world to avoid external influence. Voting continues in several rounds each day until a candidate secures a two-thirds majority.

Once elected, the chosen cardinal is asked if he accepts the role. If he does, he selects a papal name, which becomes his official title as pope. In this case, Robert Prevost chose the name Leo XIV.

Ghanaians react to Pope Leo XIV’s election

Some Ghanaian Catholics have expressed joy at the election of the first American pope. Others are hopeful that Pope Leo XIV will continue the legacy of Pope Francis, especially in areas like climate change, social justice, and the inclusion of the youth in Church leadership.

A priest at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra shared in an interview: “It’s a great moment for the universal Church. We pray that the Holy Spirit will guide Pope Leo XIV as he takes on this sacred responsibility.”
