Yakubu David, a 16-year-old final-year student at Akyem-Techiman Methodist Junior High School, has tragically died after reportedly falling into an illegal mining pit in Pramkuma, Eastern Region.

Local reports indicate that the incident occurred when David, who was allegedly involved in small-scale illegal mining (galamsey) to support himself, was in a vehicle being pursued by armed security personnel.

A resident, James Abanga, shared harrowing details, claiming that security officers suspected David of stealing gold and chased him with weapons. According to James, the teenager was assaulted before falling into the pit—though authorities have yet to confirm these allegations.

David’s death has plunged his family and the Pramkuma community into grief. His father, Yakubu Ayuba, lamented the circumstances, stating that poverty and lack of opportunities drive many youths into illegal mining. He urged the government to investigate the incident and ensure accountability.

Just weeks before he was set to take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), David’s life was tragically cut short—a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal mining in Ghana.

Despite ongoing efforts to curb galamsey, environmental destruction, water pollution, and risks to young lives persist. Many are now demanding justice for David and a thorough probe into his death, highlighting the urgent need for solutions to poverty-driven illegal mining.
