Cynthia Morrison, the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the Agona West Constituency, is one of the 280 members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have been expelled.
Following their loss in the party's internal primaries, these members allegedly betrayed the party to back Ms. Morrison in her attempt to run as an independent in the 2024 elections, which led to their expulsion.
The expelled members were notified in a letter by Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the constituency chairman, that they are no longer considered NPP members. They are also prohibited from using the NPP's flag and insignia, holding any party positions, or attending party functions, according to the letter.
According to reports, some ward coordinators, polling station executives, and constituency executives supported Ms. Morrison's choice to run as an independent.
The party's decision demonstrates its resolve to combat defection that would threaten its unity before the elections on December 7 and to enforce discipline within its ranks.
