A devastating incident occurred on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, when a man in his 50s—a businessman and contractor—was fatally attacked, struck multiple times in the head with a cement block.

Local reports indicate that the suspect, commonly known by the alias Yaw 5, fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by police.

Michael Osae, the Assemblyman for the Gyankama/Konkonduru Electoral Area, spoke to YEN.com.gh, confirming the tragedy and voicing distress over the suspect’s unchecked mental health issues and systemic failures.

“He has been arrested and sent to Pantang Hospital several times for treatment. We never saw this coming,” Osae stated.

The Assemblyman explained that Yaw 5 had a documented history of mental illness, with repeated attempts to confine him for proper psychiatric care. However, these efforts proved futile, as he was frequently released before fully recovering.

“He was detained in a police cell, only to be released the next day,” Osae lamented, highlighting his frustration.

He also criticized Ghana’s mental health management system, particularly for cases involving threats to public safety. Osae blamed both medical institutions and caregivers for failing to ensure proper supervision.

“The suspect hadn’t fully recovered, yet he was discharged… Caregivers also neglected their responsibilities in managing him,” he added.
