Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, burst into tears during a press conference after hearing a heartbreaking documentary. The movie demonstrated how Akonta Mining Company Limited had wreaked havoc on the Western Region's lands and waters.
The event occurred during a press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. The film depicted terrible scenes of illegal mining activities that have harmed the ecosystem in multiple areas. The documentary focuses on Akonta Mining's operations, which have caused significant damage to the region's rivers, farmlands, and forests.
After watching the video, the minister couldn't contain his emotions. He grieved loudly in front of reporters and other officials. He said it was heartbreaking to watch the harm to the land and the suffering of individuals in affected areas.
He stated that it is unacceptable to destroy the country's lands in such a manner. He went on to say that the water bodies are becoming brown and that children will suffer if we do not put an end to these illegal practices.
Mr. Buah assured that the government would take harsh measures against individuals who caused the destruction. He also stated that Akonta Mining Company would be probed and penalized if found guilty. He also urged chiefs, community leaders, and all Ghanaians to join the fight against illegal mining, known as "galamsey."
The minister stated that the government is committed to conserving Ghana's natural resources for future generations. He warned all companies and individuals participating in illicit mining to quit immediately or face legal consequences.
The press conference concluded with a forceful plea for unity and responsibility in environmental protection, as the country faces ongoing challenges from illegal mining activities.
