A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) helicopter crashed on Thursday afternoon, August 7, in Mwihoko, Githurai.

Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud blast around 3:10 p.m., after which dense smoke was seen rising from a nearby bush.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, Kenya Red Cross personnel, and KDF troops, swiftly arrived at the site. Locals who reached the scene shortly after the incident reported seeing burning debris and what appeared to be human remains, though the exact death toll has not been confirmed.

The helicopter was said to be on a standard training flight when it crashed. Although the KDF has not released an official comment, initial reports indicate possible mechanical failure or adverse weather conditions as contributing factors.

Military personnel have secured the area as inquiries into the crash begin.

The accident has raised fresh questions about the safety of KDF aircraft, following a similar tragedy in Kajiado in 2021 that claimed several lives.

The Ministry of Defence is anticipated to release more information soon, and authorities have advised the public to stay away from the crash site to facilitate uninterrupted rescue and investigation efforts.
