The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the immediate suspension of operations for more than 60 FM radio stations, including Wontumi FM and Asaase Radio, for failing to comply with broadcast laws.

According to sources corroborated by 3News.com, Wontumi FM's Accra and Takoradi locations, as well as Asaase Radio's Accra station, are among those affected by the NCA's enforcement action, which was revealed on Wednesday, June 12, 2025.

The directive follows a recent frequency audit and a ministerial order from the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, which directed the NCA to crack down on non-compliant stations in order to maintain regulatory compliance throughout the broadcasting sector.

The NCA stated that the enforcement action was necessary owing to chronic infringement of laws under L.I. 1991 and the Electronic Communications Act of 2008 (Act 775).

The infractions fall into four categories:

28 stations operating with expired authorisations, despite previous orders in 2024 to cease broadcasting.

14 stations that failed to commence operations within two years after receiving authorisations, yet continue to broadcast without meeting inspection requirements.

13 stations granted provisional authorisations but have not paid the full fees.

7 stations that paid fees but have not fulfilled other regulatory obligations necessary for final approval.

The NCA emphasized that these stations do not currently hold valid broadcasting authorisations or certificates of compliance, and may only resume operations after rectifying all outstanding issues.

“While the NCA acknowledges the vital role radio stations play in national development, it is imperative that all authorisation holders strictly adhere to regulatory requirements,”

the authority stated.

The NCA warned that failure to comply would have serious consequences, potentially leading to permanent revocation of broadcasting rights

The regulatory body concluded by encouraging all broadcasting entities to align with licensing requirements to promote order and professionalism within Ghana’s media landscape.
