Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), must be removed immediately, according to a call by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC claims that Brigadier General Opoku has a "notorious" record that is unworthy of his post, in contrast to many other professionals and noblemen and women in Ghana's security institutions. The

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the NDC, told reporters on Tuesday, November 19, that this "devious" guy wears the bloodshed and violence that Brigadier General Opoku oversaw at Ayawaso West Wugon as a badge of dishonor.

“A person like him has no place in the current environment where Ghanaians are calling for violence-free elections. Given his history, we call for his immediate removal from his position as GOC of the Central Command,” he said.

He went on to say that Brigadier General Opoku is a "miscreant" who shouldn't be part of the security plan for the general elections in 2024.

The NDC wants to let Brigadier-General Michael Opoku and his New Patriotic Party associates know that they are on our radar and that we will keep a close check on them. He and others like him will fail this time. "This year's election cannot and will not be won by violence," Mr. Gyamfi cautioned. Additionally, the NDC urged Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), to make sure that no one usurps his position of power.

The party stated that eight innocent Ghanaians, including those murdered in broad daylight at Techiman South, were shot and killed during the 2020 elections, and that the people of Ghana are still waiting for justice. "The Election Security Task Force and the IGP need to investigate this election-rigging scheme and prevent Brig.-General Opoku and his goons from carrying out another Techiman South-style murder. "The IGP has an obligation to the Ghanaian people to maintain peace both during and after the elections by being firm and impartial. We promise him our utmost help in this matter.

The party also demanded that Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, the Chief of Defense Staff, look into these claims and hold Brigadier General Opoku responsible. "The IGP, the Chief of Defense Staff, and our security heads will be held accountable by the NDC and, consequently, the Ghanaian people for any fatalities in the general elections of 2024." "Counting heads, not cutting heads, is the goal of elections. The party also stated that no one should die on the altar of elections.
