Three people were killed after a fight between police and a group attempting to steal gold at the Newmont mining facility in Ntotroso.
The Ghana Police Service has effectively restored order in Ntotroso after a security breach at the Newmont mining complex last night, January 8, 2025.
A gang of people attempted to steal gold from the mine, resulting in a conflict with police that killed three people and injured four more.
During the incident, police officers were forced to interact with the suspects in order to control the situation.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector-General of Police, intervened promptly and worked closely with the Regional Police team throughout the night. Efforts were made to interact with community leaders and youth in order to de-escalate emotions and avoid future violence or retaliation attacks.
As a result of these efforts, the situation in Ntotroso has stabilised.
According to the police, a special investigative team has been dispatched from Accra to undertake a comprehensive inquiry into the occurrence, while a reinforcement squad has been sent to the village to ensure peace and order.
The Ghana Police Service has revealed that all three people who died were Muslims.
The required legal procedures are being pursued to enable the timely and dignified return of their corpses to their families for burial later today, January 9, 2025.
Meanwhile, police are requesting the public to be calm and cooperative during the inquiry.
