Ofankor Abuse Case: Husband Remanded as Wife Reveals a History of Terror

A shocking viral video that exposed the brutal assault of a woman by her husband in Ofankor has taken a significant legal turn. John Odartey Lamptey, the man seen in the footage, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks. He will not be facing justice alone; his two siblings, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, have also been remanded for allegedly attempting to attack the female tenant they believed recorded and circulated the video.

But behind the headlines and the legal proceedings lies a story of repeated terror and a desperate struggle for safety.

In a brave interview with the media, the victim has come forward to share the harrowing pattern of abuse that led to that day. She revealed that the assault captured on video was not an isolated incident, but the fifth time her husband had physically attacked her.

A System That Failed Her

Perhaps even more alarming than the frequency of the abuse is her account of seeking help. She disclosed that she had reported the previous assaults to the police on multiple occasions, but no meaningful action was ever taken. This systemic failure left her trapped and unprotected.

Her story reveals the calculated manipulation she endured. After the fourth assault, she managed to escape, fleeing to her hometown where she stayed for four months in safety. Her freedom was shattered when her husband deceived her into returning by cruelly claiming one of their children was gravely ill.

Upon her return, his true intentions were revealed. “You have fallen into my trap,” he told her, before making intimate demands. When she refused, the assault began anew.

The Anatomy of a Public Humiliation

The victim provided a chilling breakdown of the events in the now-viral video. The attack started inside their room, where he beat her and then forced her to remove her clothes. He justified this by claiming that since he had bought them, he owned them.

This calculated act of dehumanization is why she was seen naked in the video, as the violence spilled from their room into the compound of the family residence for all to see.

A Desperate Escape

Following the brutal attack, the victim’s immediate reality was one of sheer survival. With nowhere to go and fearing for her life, she escaped by boarding a bus to Kumasi, where she spent the night at the Kejetia terminal.

This case is no longer just about a single viral video. It has become a stark reminder of the hidden horrors of domestic abuse, the lengths abusers will go to maintain control, and the critical need for systems that protect victims when they are most vulnerable. As the Lampteys await their day in court, a nation is watching, hoping that this time, justice will be served.
