According to a story on dailyguidenetwork.com, police acknowledged a violent altercation between cops and five suspected highway robbers on the Kumasi-Bibiani Road, which ended in the death of one suspect. The remaining four suspects escaped, but they are thought to have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.

The incident took place at 7:30 p.m. on June 2, 2025, when the suspects allegedly stopped two vehicles carrying passengers and held them at gunpoint with the purpose to rob them. Their illegal preparations were thwarted when a police patrol unit arrived on the scene.

According to a police statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Department, the suspects, armed with a pump-action shotgun, started fire as soon as they saw the policemen. The police replied quickly with return fire, fatally shooting one of the criminals. Medical staff at the Afari Government Hospital later verified his death.

The four other suspects ran into the surrounding countryside during the gunfight and are still at large. Police believe the suspects who fled are hurt and may seek medical assistance for their wounds.

As a result, police have advised all health facilities, particularly those close the Kumasi-Bibiani section, to remain watchful. Medical professionals and the general public are encouraged to report anyone seeking treatment for inexplicable gunshot wounds to the local police station.

"The Police are, therefore, appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to be on the lookout and report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station," Ahianyo, DSP, stated.

He further stated that the body of the deceased suspect has been placed in the morgue at the Afari Government Hospital for preservation and further investigation. The authorities are also attempting to identify the dead and determine his connections to the heist ring.

In his statement, DSP Ahianyo applauded the Nkawie Patrol Team's prompt response and professionalism. He said that their bravery in the face of armed criminals prevented a possibly fatal heist and saved innocent lives.

He also urged the people to assist the police by providing any information that could lead to the capture of the fleeing culprits. He emphasized the significance of community collaboration in guaranteeing security and safety on Ghana's key roadways, particularly those that have become hotspots for armed robbery.

This is the latest in a string of robbery-related incidents along the Kumasi-Bibiani route, which has experienced an increase in attacks on travelers in recent months. The Ghana Police Service has committed to increase patrols in the region and collaborate with local communities to apprehend the suspects and avoid similar attacks.

As investigations continue, authorities have informed the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the remaining suspects and restore peace and safety to the impacted road corridor.
