For the first time, President John Dramani Mahama has publicly addressed the ongoing proceedings regarding three petitions calling for the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking at a Council of State meeting on Monday, July 7, 2025, the President acknowledged the complexity of the situation, describing it as a “difficult issue” faced by his administration within its first six months. He noted that the Council of State had already fulfilled its role by establishing a prima facie case, leading to Justice Torkornoo’s suspension.
The matter is now before a five-member committee, chaired by Supreme Court Judge Gabriel Scott Pwamang, which is reviewing the petitions.
“On governance matters, we encountered a challenging situation concerning the suspension of the Chief Justice. The Council of State played its part in the initial process,” President Mahama stated.
“We have completed our responsibilities, and the committee will now determine the next steps based on its findings,” he added.
The President emphasized that Justice Torkornoo’s future hinges on the committee’s conclusions, stating, “Once the findings are presented, the necessary actions will follow accordingly.”
