A devastating crash on the Abuakwa–Sunyani road has claimed the lives of eight people, including the driver of a Mercedes-Benz saloon car. The collision involved a VIP Jeoun Transport bus and the Mercedes, leaving both vehicles severely wrecked.
According to witnesses, the Mercedes driver was reportedly speeding and attempted to overtake another vehicle when he crashed head-on into an oncoming VIP bus traveling from Sunyani to Kumasi.
The impact was so severe that the Mercedes was left completely mangled. The VIP bus also suffered extensive damage to its front and upper sections. Rescue officials who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash found seven bus passengers already dead. The Mercedes driver was also confirmed dead on the spot.
Images from the scene paint a grim picture—the VIP bus with shattered windows, a partially crushed roof, and debris scattered across the road, suggesting the bus may have lost control or overturned before coming to a stop.
Emergency teams and police spent hours at the location, assisting survivors and retrieving victims from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations by the Ghana Police point to dangerous overtaking by the Mercedes driver as the likely cause of the accident.
This heartbreaking incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and reckless driving on Ghana’s major highways, with many citizens calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
