Tragic Accident at University of Cape Coast Claims One Life, Leaves Multiple Injured

A horrific crash took place on Thursday, June 19, 2025, near the University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) second gate, resulting in one fatality and several severe injuries. Surveillance footage captured a heavily laden truck speeding downhill before it lost control, plowing into two cars, a rickshaw (locally called ‘pragya’), and a pedestrian.

According to witnesses, the truck likely experienced brake failure, hurtling uncontrollably toward the gate before slamming into the vehicles and pedestrian. The collision was violent, with onlookers screaming as the truck crushed and dragged the victims.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, rushing the injured to the hospital. Sadly, one person died, while others remain in critical condition.

The tragedy has sparked renewed demands from students, residents, and university staff for stricter traffic measures around UCC. Many have long raised concerns about reckless speeding, especially near the second and main gates, where heavy trucks frequently travel.

Calls are mounting for speed bumps, traffic signals, warning signs, and a reassessment of truck routes near the campus to prevent future accidents. The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UCC) had previously warned about rising crashes in the area but claims no significant action was taken.

As the community grieves, police are investigating, and the truck driver has been detained for questioning.
