A devastating accident on the Nsawam-Suhum road has left a community in mourning after a horrific crash between a Ford Transit minibus and a fuel tanker claimed nearly all lives on board.

The minibus was transporting members of the Saviour Church back to Obogu following a church event in Osiem when the tragedy occurred near Juaso in the Asante-Akim South Municipality. According to witnesses, the tanker, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, forced the minibus to swerve onto the roadside. Despite the driver’s desperate efforts to avoid a collision, the tanker lost control and slammed into the bus, causing catastrophic damage.

The force of the impact left the minibus mangled beyond recognition, with most passengers dying instantly. Only a handful of survivors were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to Juaso Government Hospital, where they remain in critical condition. As word of the accident spread, distraught residents of Obogu flooded the hospital, frantically searching for information about their relatives.

Emergency responders, including the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), swiftly arrived to assist with rescue operations and traffic control. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Steward Hospital morgue in Yawkwei for identification and autopsy as authorities launched an investigation.

This tragic event has renewed urgent calls for improved road safety along the Nsawam-Suhum highway, a route long plagued by deadly accidents. Local leaders and road safety campaigners are demanding immediate action—better road conditions, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and public education to prevent future disasters.

The grief-stricken families of the victims have united the community in sorrow, sparking a powerful demand for change to prevent such heartbreak from happening again.
