Wesley Girls SHS sued for discrimination against Muslim students.

Wesley Girls, one of Ghana's premier all-girls secondary schools, is facing a lawsuit over charges that it denied Muslim students the ability to practice their religion.

The institution has been accused of systematically oppressing Muslim students by limiting their freedom to follow Islamic traditions.

The complainant, Sahfic Osman, is demanding that the court determine that the school's policy preventing Muslim pupils from practicing Islam violates the 1992 Constitution.

The complaint also challenged the school's forced religious practices, saying that they violate constitutional restrictions.

Furthermore, the complainant claimed that these limits violate the welfare and rights of Muslim students, as defined by international human rights standards recognized by the constitution.

The complaint seeks an injunction directing the Ghana Education Service to develop constitutionally compliant standards for controlling religious practices in all public schools throughout the country.

Wesley Girls was in the news a few years ago after refusing to allow a Muslim student to fast during Ramadan. The incident provoked uproar among the Muslim caucus in parliament and the wider Muslim community.
