'It is about the economy, stupid!' - Mahama slams Bawumia over 50 questions

Former President and NDC Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has clapped back at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for ‘running away from the economy’ again in a recent exchange of questions.

Quoting a line from the Bill Clinton campaign, Mahama said, “It’s about the economy, stupid!”

Mahama's comments come after Bawumia posed 50 questions to him, following Mahama's initial five questions on the economy.

In a passionate response, Mahama likened Bawumia's response to someone who just learned nursery rhymes and stated that the Vice President's questions were irrelevant to the pressing economic concerns of Ghanaians.

“It looks like our vice president has just learned those things in the 50 questions. The way we used to learn Baba Black Sheep and Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, because I asked you five simple questions on the economy.

“Those are simple questions that Ghanaians want you to answer. You go and respond with how many compost plants you built. That is not what the issue is in Ghana.

“Let me take you down memory lane. In 1992 there was an election in America. It was between Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr. At that time, the American economy was in recession the way the Ghanaian economy is in crisis today. And people were talking about immigration, talking about all kinds of useless things. Do you know what the Clinton people said? ‘It is about the economy, stupid!’

“Today I'm repeating those words. This election is about the economy, stupid! It's not about all those other useless things about who built how many compost plants. Answer the five simple questions!” he said

Mahama further urged Bawumia to directly address the economic challenges facing the country instead of waiting for a debate.

“You can't hide behind a debate. You don't need a debate to answer the five questions.

When you asked Amissah Arthur 170 questions, you did not agree to go and debate for him to answer them. Ghanaians are asking you five simple questions. Just answer them. Akufo-Addo too has given him two questions, he should come and answer them. That's all Ghanaians are looking for,” he said.
