1.3 billion cedis for rehabilitation of Zomaniga Dam

Zomaniga (UER), May 19, GNA - Government is to spend about 1.3 billion cedis to rehabilitate the Zomaniga Dam near Garu in the Garu-Tempane district that had broken down for the past 25 years. Work on the dam estimated to irrigate 10 hectares would be completed in June this year for the 2006-2007 dry seasons farming for people from 12 farming communities within its catchment area. Mr Emmanuel Asigri, Garu-Tempane District Chief Executive who inspected progress of work on the dam on Wednesday said the assembly was focusing most of its attention on agriculture and education to improve the living and educational standard of the people. He said while the children had the potential to perform well in school, the adults were hard working and interested in improving their lives.

"Given the opportunity they would not only help themselves, but provide fresh foodstuffs and vegetables all year round for the country," He added. He said the people were interested in dry season farming and would make good use of any opportunity provided to produce fresh foods during the dry season.

Mr Asigri called on the youth from the area that had migrated to the south for employment to return home and make an honest and good livelihood from agriculture.
