1.5 billion cedis project inaugurated at Akrofuom-Adansi

Akrofuom-Ashanti, May 04, GNA - Four development projects completed at a total cost of 1.5 billion cedis have been inaugurated at Akrofuom in the Adansi South district of Ashanti.

Three of the projects, a girls' hostel for the Akrofuom Senior Secondary Technical school, a six-classroom block for the local Methodist primary school and a maternity block for the Akrofuom health centre were financed by the former Adansi West District Assembly. The fourth project, a market that has 30 lockable stores; two 20-seater capacity pavilions and 30 stalls was initiated by the community.

Inaugurating the projects, Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, Adansi South District Chief Executive, said over one billion cedis had been spent through the provision of classroom blocks, assistance to brilliant but needy students to pursue higher education and the development of sports at the basic education level.

He said these were efforts by the assembly to develop the human resource base of the district since the development agenda of the district needed to be carried forward.

Mr Dorpenyoh said provision of potable water to the people was one of the challenges facing the assembly but said with the support of the World Bank 94 boreholes had been drilled for 70 communities. He said the assembly and beneficiary communities spent 280 million cedis each whilst the development partner contributed over five billion cedis

Mr Joe Boampong, former Adansi West District Chief Executive and now Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, was optimistic that the assembly would continue with the development agenda for the area. He said joining the area to Adansi South would undoubtedly facilitate development of the area.

Mr Kwabena Appiah-Pinkrah, Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, said the Akrofuom Area Rural Bank, supported the community with a loan for the construction of the market.

He was optimistic that activities at the market would improve to become famous like Fumso market, which had been drafted to Adansi North as a result of the new demarcation. Mr Appiah-Pinkrah said the Akrofuom constituency needed development and called for effective collaboration between stakeholders to realize that goal.

Mr M. Jonas Woode, Assemblyman for Akrofuom, commended the MP for rehabilitating the local Methodist Junior Secondary School (JSS) at a cost of 80 million cedis.
