After reports that Parliament was thrown into laughter when John Frimpong Osei rose to ask the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, a question about the connection of some communities in his constituency to the national grid, many have wondered why some of the communities had sexually suggestive names.

The names included Kote Ye Aboa’, ‘Hwoa Ye Mmobo’ and ‘Etwe nim Nyansa’. While ‘Kote Ye Aboa’ literally means the penis is an animal, ‘Etwe Nim Nyansa’ literally means vagina is wise; ‘Hwoa Ye Mmobo’ literally means the testicle is pitiful.

According to an old lady who is a resident, the communities were named as such by three men [Nana Akrofisa, Kofisa Ampong and Kwadwo Gyinaye] based on a treatment meted out to one of them.

“History has it that Nana Akrofisa went to marry. The family of the lady told him that if the lady gets wealth, she is supposed to bring it home; if she incurs any debt whatsoever, he will be responsible for settling the debts. The lady upon moving to the man’s house stole somebody’s cocoyam. She was slapped with a fine but her family said her action was as a result of failure on the part of the man to take care of her so the man should pay the fine,” she recounted to Peace News.

“The lady left the man. She left with their only child. So Kofisa in an interaction with Kwadwo Gyinaye said ‘ei, in fact, the penis is an animal; the vagina is wise’. Then Kofisa added that the testicles are the worst among all” she added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Agyarko says the Ministry will soon conduct a survey to ascertain the best way to get the communities connected to the national grid.
