128 former MMDCEs petition Transition Team over end-of-service benefit arrears

A group of former Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have petitioned the 2024 Presidential Transition Team for what they say are outstanding arrears owed to them by the government.

According to a spokesperson for the group, the government owes the 128 former MMDCEs around GHC 90,000 each.

“When the Transition was inaugurated, we wrote to the team, reminding the government about the outstanding benefits and also drawing the attention of the new government to the issue of these outstanding end-of-service benefits. So far, we have not heard anything from the team,” the spokesperson told JoyNews in an interview.

“So far, we are 134, but unfortunately, six have died, leaving 128,” he added.

Speaking of the current state of the former MMDCEs, the spokesperson said they have all been forced into early retirement as they currently remain unemployed, with all efforts to acquire employment proving futile.

“Currently, we are unemployed, and those who asked for clearance to be integrated back into the teaching service could not have this opportunity,” he stated.

He thus appealed to the outgoing government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to clear the arrears while also pleading with the incoming John Dramani Mahama-led administration to ensure they are paid if the current government fails to do so.
