14% of registered births in Ghana by teenage mothers

It has been revealed that about 30 percent of registered births in Ghana are by adolescents with 14 per cent being teenage mothers between the ages of 15 and 19 years.

This has subsequently accounted for the high numbers of teenage pregnancies in Ghana as most girls in their teen brackets begin childbearing earlier than the stipulated age.

2014 records released by the Ministry of Health (MOH), revealed that the phenomenon is more alarming in rural communities within the three Northern Regions where there is no sex education.

It is in the light of this, a group calling itself the Volunteers from the International Service has begun a sensitization drive to of engaging students of various basic schools in the country in creating awareness on causes, prevention, and effects of TEENAGE PREGNANCY.
