The retrieved body of the boy who had gone swimming
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has retrieved the body of a 14-year-old boy who drowned at Fiapre Catholic Junction on the Sunyani Ring Road in the Bono Region.
In a press release dated February 7, 2026, the deceased, identified as Matthew Mahama, reportedly went swimming with friends in a river at Fiapre on Thursday, February 5, 2026, when he got into distress.
According to the GNFS, the incident was reported at about 8:51 a.m., prompting the immediate dispatch of a rescue team from the Sunyani Municipal Fire Station, led by Station Officer II (STNO II) Clement Takyi.

“A GNFS rescue team led by STNO II Clement Takyi from the Sunyani Municipal Fire Station was promptly dispatched to the scene and successfully searched for and retrieved the body of the boy, who had gone swimming with friends in a river at Fiapre,” the statement said.
The body was later retrieved from the river and handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the scene for preservation and further investigation.
