18-year-old jailed 40 months for stealing plantain

Techiman (B/A), June 16, GNA - The Techiman circuit court has sentenced Nana Fosu, an 18-year-old unemployed of Nsawkaw in Brong Ahafo to 40 months in prison in hard labour for stealing four bunches of plantain worth 50,000 cedis. Fosu pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing the plantain, property of Mr Stephen Nyarko of Techiman-Abanim.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Sampson Y. Jebuni told the court presided over by Mr Justice Erasmus Gyinae that, for about two months Mr Nyarko detected the theft of plantain form his farm at Techiman Timber Market area. The prosecutor said he alerted colleague farmers, who arrested the accused on June 12, this year, harvesting four bunches from Mr Nyarko's farm.

Police detected that the accused used a blade instead of a cutlass to harvest the plantain and led the police to the farm to demonstrate how he did it. Passing sentence, Mr Gyinae said that the accused was a criminal, as he was strong enough to have his own farm. He ordered that the plantain should be given back to the owner. 1
