2 Get 50 Years For Robbery

Two unemployed men were yesterday sentenced to 50 years by an Accra Circuit Court after they attempted to rob a man of his money in his home.

However, the accused persons, Isaac Ahinkra, 19 and Kwame Ntim, 24, who wielded a hammer and knife in the operation did not succeed when the complainant they wanted to attack struggled with them and raised the alarm leading to their arrest.

The two pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and attempted robbery.

The trial judge Mr. Francis Obiri consequently convicted the accused persons on their own plea.

They were each given five years for conspiracy and 20 years for attempted robbery.

The facts of the case as presented by the prosecuting officer DSP Reindorf Agyemang are that the complainant is 53 years and residing at Agblezaa, while the first and second accused persons are unemployed and reside at Ayokorwor at Teshie.

According to him, on November 8, 2012, at about 7:20 p.m. the complainant was in his room watching television when the accused persons, wearing masks, barged in and ordered him to give them all the money he had.

He said the complainant managed to struggle with Ntim and screamed for assistance while Ahinkra was at the gate watching to make sure no one saw them.

The police officer stated that some neighbours who heard the complainant rushed to his rescue and the accused persons took to their heels but the neighbours pursued them and had them arrested.

The prosecutor noted that the two were taken to the police station and that in their caution statement they admitted the offence and were consequently charged.
