2 Thieves lynched for stealing Ghc900

Two young men in their late 20s have been lynched in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, under the eyes of passengers and traders at the main lorry park for allegedly stealing GH¢900.00 from a Burkinabe trader who had just alighted from a bus from Kumasi.

The two deceased were among a gang of three thieves who were suspected to have operated at the Bolgatanga lorry park for some time, to the inconvenience of honest loading boys who had always been wrongly accused of stealing by victims of the gang.?Narrating the story to DAILY GUIDE yesterday, a male porter said on Sunday at about 4:30 am, a bus from Kumasi arrived at the park and as usual, all of them (porters) around rushed to it with the intention of getting a load to carry.

According to him, while they were running towards the load compartment, one of the deceased went towards the door and managed to snatch a small bag containing the money from the passenger who happened to be a Burkinabe. The man being smart, held the hand of the thief but he (Burkinabe) was wounded with a knife and lost control.

The thief was soon apprehended by some station boys, but managed to throw the bag to a second person and when he was being given a hot chase by the angry mob, he also passed it on to a third person who was at a vantage point on a motorbike. He managed to escape and could not be identified.

Out of anger, the mob pounced on the two thieves and subjected them to a severe beating thereby weakening them.

According to the source, when the two became weak and looked?motionless, someone suggested that they should be sent to the police station, but the mob chanted, “No! No! No!” in disapproval. Some of them brought out a substance which was later detected to be acid and poured onto the eyes of the two suspected criminals, before carrying them to a nearby river where they were dumped.

In a related development, another person was rescued by the police in Bolgatanga from the hands of an angry mob yesterday. The young man would have been lynched.

At the time of filing this report, a junior police officer today DAILY GUIDE that the law enforcement agents were yet to be briefed as to why the young man was beaten – and was about to be lynched.
