Two armed robbers who specialise in robbing mobile money merchants in Ashaiman and its environs are in the firm grip of the police at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

The two suspected robbers -Yakubu Ibrahim, a 21-year-old driver’s mate, and Agali Musah, a 24-year-old motor mechanic – were said to have attacked a mobile money operator at gun point and robbed her of her sales and items.

The police said the suspects are on their wanted list for various mobile money merchant robberies.

Items retrieved on the suspects were one locally manufactured pistol, one BB live ammunition cartridge and a bag which contained some of the various recharge cards which was snatched from the victim.

Nevertheless, the money and the motorbike used for the operation could not be retrieved as a result of the public who had dissipated the money in their bid to mete out instant justice to the suspects before the arrival of the police. The bike was also nowhere to be found.

Briefing DAILY GUDIE, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, explained that the suspects who were wielding a locally manufactured pistol on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 8.30pm on a motorbike, attacked one Patricia Azaledzi, a mobile money merchant, at Pentecost Junction at Ashaiman.

According to her, the suspects robbed the victim of her unconfirmed number of Surfline data, an assorted mobile phone recharge cards and a Nokia mobile phone, all valued at GH¢2,100.

They also succeeded in robbing her of a cash amount of GH¢10,200.

However, the motorbike used for the robbery, ASP Obeng disclosed, failed to start after the robbery.

She added that the victim quickly raised an alarm which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The police PRO pointed out that but for the timely arrival of the police at the scene, the suspects would have fled.

“The suspects then took to their heels but were intercepted by police patrol team who were responding to the distress call of the robbery,” ASP Juliana Obeng stated.

She said the items that were found at the scene have been retrieved for evidential purposes.
