2 robbers get 90 years

Two robbers, who armed themselves with a locally manufactured pistol and robbed three persons at Tema Newtown, have been sentenced by a Tema circuit court to a total of 90 years’ imprisonment.

They were charged with conspiracy to commit crime contrary to Section 23 (1) and 149 of Act 29/60 and robbery, contrary to Section 149 of Act 29/40, to which they pleaded not guilty.

Tetteh Kojo Lamptey alias Hotman and Joshua Azibor alias Joe, 25-year-old driver and 27-year-old labourer respectively, who reside at Kasoa in the Central Region, embarked on their criminal operation at Tema Newtown where they robbed a clearing agent, a trader and a hairdresser, using a taxi and pretending to be offering them commercial services.

They were found guilty of the charges after years of trial and sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment each by the court, presided over by Mrs. Florence Ninepence.

On July 4, 2013 at about 10:00 am, the accused persons on board a Kia Rio taxi with registration number GW5862-13, and driven by Tetteh Kojo Lamptey, arrived at Tema Newtown to embark on the operation.

On the same day at about 7:10pm, a complainant, Mavis Lagble, boarded the taxi from the Chemu Lagoon bridge at Tema Newtown to Manhean.

On reaching the Plus One Junction, Joshua Azibor, who was sitting behind the complainant, suddenly attacked her and collected from her a ladies’ handbag valued at GHc20, which was containing one Techno mobile phone valued at GHc90 and an amount of GHc100. The two accused persons thereafter pushed the complainant from the moving vehicle and sped off.

The accused person again went to the Tema Newtown main lorry park where another complainant, Eunice Sowah, boarded the taxi to Bankuman, a suburb of Tema Newtwon, and her bag, valued at GHc20, RLG-R6 mobile phone valued at GHc30 and GHc4 were snatched.

The convicts again went to the Chemu Lagoon bridge at about 8:20pm, when one Gifty Adiwokor boarded the taxi to Manhean. On reaching the Meridian Fm junction, she was robbed of her handbag valued at GHc25 which was containing one Samsung mobile phone valued at GHc150, Techno mobile phone costing GHc65 and GHc57.

Complaints were lodge at the Tema Newtown District Police Station and they were later nabbed and processed for court.
