Accra, Sept. 16, GNA - Twenty out of 100 Police Land Rovers that went off the road due to accidents and lack of spares at the end of 2000 have been put back on the road.
It took government sometime to secure an agreement with Land Rover Company of the UK to release spare parts for the vehicles, Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Minister of The Interior told Journalists on Tuesday at the Meet-The-Press Series in Accra.
The 100 Land Rover vehicles were presented to the Ghana Police Service almost a decade ago, but most of them were grounded soon after. The absence of the vehicles virtually incapacitated the Service, thus increasing the crime wave.
The Minister described as unfortunate the frequent breakdown of vehicles in the Service and urged the authorities to ensure that investment made yielded the right benefits to society.
He warned that bad nuts in the Service would be weeded out. Meanwhile 425 Peugeot cars have been allocated to the Police Service to facilitate patrolling, monitoring and apprehension of criminals.
