2004 Review: Top Story

Ghana's general elections, the fourth in a row since multiparty democracy in 1992, was voted the top story by GhanaHomePage visitors.

President Kufuor won a second term and his ruling New Patriotic Party cemented its parliamentary majority after elections that set Ghana firmly on the path towards democracy. Turnout was an incredible 83%.

This is a country where since independence in 1957, there had never been two consecutive elections without the interruption of a military coup.
