$200m Parliament’s Chamber: NPP Secretary threatens to resign

The Adansi Asokwa Constituency Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Samuel Awui has threatened to resign from his position over proposed new 450-seater new parliamentary chamber worth $200m.

“I will resign from the party as Secretary”, he vowed on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com after the NPP Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. K.T Hammond received a backlash from the constituents and some Ghanaians for a submission made on the new proposed chamber.

According to Mr. Samuel Awui, Hon. K.T. Hammond did nothing wrong when said on the floor of parliament that building a new chamber for parliamentarians is necessary despite strong rejection by Ghanaians.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency K.T Hammond definitely did not see the seeming ‘attack’ from Convener of Economic Fighters League, Ernesto Yeboah coming.

Like the norm on a normal working day, the business for the house had been read by the Majority Leader after which Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tong constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa asked a question about when the Majority Leader will be briefing the house about plans to build a new parliamentary complex.

The lawmaker, Mr. KT Hammond who stood to make his submission on the issue as had been raised was suddenly interrupted by a loud voice from behind him just as he was nearing the end of his submission.

KT Hammond’s submission was as following,

“Mr. Speaker, number one, some of us don’t even know if it is a stated policy that parliament is going to be built and indeed who is taking the initiative. Parliament chamber or building is not for Members of Parliament, it is one of the significant symbols or building blocks of democracy. We won’t have democracy without parliament. Mr. Speaker, I’m sure the press will take me on on this, Parliament won’t sit under trees so Mr. Speaker, this whole matter should be brought to the fore, let it be debated and then ultimately a decision one way or the other be made….”
