The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has successfully launched this year’s National Christmas and New Year Road Safety campaign.
The event, which attracted dignitaries such as the Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, and his Deputy, Titus Glover, as well as the Commander of Police, COP Tetteh Yohuno, took place at the Neoplan Station, Cirlce.
Delivering the keynote address, the Transport Minister, Mr. Asiamah, called on drivers, passengers, pedestrians as well as road safety agencies to execute their collective responsibilities in ensuring an ‘accident-free’ festive season. He entreated pedestrians to be selective in their choice of vehicles, as well as speaking against reckless driving.
“The responsibility is for all to commit to ensure a zero free accident society. This requires that, we must bear a behavioural change towards our safety on the road. We must think road safety at all times. Thinking safety requires that we just don’t accept any choice of vehicle available at the terminal. Thinking road safety requires that, keeping quiet to unnecessary behaviour or risky conducts by both drivers and passengers is not enough”, the Minister said.
He added that pedestrians must endeavour to make good use of pedestrian crossing points and footbridges to cross roads instead of running across the streets.
Mr. Asiamah admonished drivers to desist from reckless overtaking, speeding, fatigue driving and drunk driving.
The Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Ing. Mrs. May Obiri Yeboah, explained that the event was to intensify the commission’s education and sensitization of all road users on good road safety practices, and the rigid enforcement of road traffic laws and quick response to crash victims in case of an accident.
The 2017 Christmas and New Year Road Safety Campaign was launched by the National Road Safety Commission, in partnership with Patients Friend Foundation, an NGO which provides health services through social mobilization, education, screening and treatment with the help of individuals, corporate bodies, stakeholders and sponsorship.
