The annual National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) was launched in Accra on Tuesday with a total of 135 schools competing for the coveted title.
Out of these schools, 108 qualified through the Regional Competitions which was held across the country from March-May 2019.
Presently, the number of schools participating in the quiz month long exercise has over 130 schools pitching camp against one another for the enviable trophy
The previous quiz competition (2018 edition) witnessed St Peter’s Senior High School, being crowned as winners after beating West Africa Senior High School and Adisadel College.
WASS plunged the country into a state of shock when they battled it all out with PERSCO and ADISCO to win second place thereby leading with 41 points at the end of the fourth round and their first attempt in the overall competition.
However, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in charge of Quality and Access, Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh who launched this year’s competition identified it as a means to promote the study of sciences and mathematics and also to foster healthy academic rivalry among senior high schools.
He reiterated the idea for the production of the quiz programme was aimed at helping students particularly the ‘girl child’ develop the interest in these two male dominated subjects.
"The competition has since been dominated by male schools with Achimota School being the only mix school to win. It is important that we focus on encouraging science among our young women.
I would also like everyone to know the government attaches a lot of importance to increasing the participation of science and technology among women. At the basic level among other things we are introducing a coding technology for girls,” He added.
Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh also established how the idea has contributed in producing medical doctors, mathematicians, scientists, pharmacists, chemical engineers, aeronautic engineers, physicians among many other science-related professional.
