Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for unity and peace ahead of the December 2024 elections.

Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, November 28, 2024, he urged all stakeholders to take responsibility for ensuring a peaceful electoral process, emphasizing that the ultimate goal of power is to deliver prosperity to the people.

The vice president also stated that Ghana's reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa is a result of the collective commitment of leaders, institutions, and citizens to uphold peace as the cornerstone of national progress.

"Since the dawn of the Fourth Republic in the early nineties, Ghana has been a model of democracy and an inspiration to many across the African Continent and beyond. This feat is not by chance. It is due to the continuous efforts of our leaders, institutions and citizens who understand the value of peace as the bedrock for national progress," he explained.

Touching on the country's democratic journey since 1992, Dr. Bawumia noted that each election has demonstrated Ghana’s commitment to the constitution and the rule of law, while acknowledging the unique dynamics of every election.

"So far, each time we head to the polls, we have passed the test. we have shown that it is possible to rise above our differences and unite for our country. As we head into the December 2024 polls, the ninth presidential elections, I am certain Ghana will win, and peace will reign," he added.

Dr. Bawumia entreated all stakeholders, including candidates, electoral officers, voters, the media, and the public, to take their responsibilities seriously to ensure a peaceful election.

He urged unity and harmony, underscoring the responsibility leaders owe to the nation's youth to create enduring opportunities for future generations.

"As we approach the home stretch of the elections 2024, my plea to everybody involved in the electioneering process, including candidates, electoral officers, voters and the media, and the general public, is to take responsibility in ensuring peace and harmony seriously and to demonstrate that we are not reluctant democrats. My hope is that we will come out of this election stronger.

"We are hopeful that all sides will take positive steps to preserve the unity of this country, and we owe the people of this country, particularly the teeming youth, the responsibility of care," he stated.

The Presidential Election Peace Pact, organised under the auspices of the National Peace Council (NPC) and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), was on the theme: “Pursuing Peaceful Elections, Non-Violence and Justice”.
