The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reportedly decided to make the current independent Member of Parliament for Fomena and 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, its candidate for the 2024 parliamentary election for the Fomena Constituency.

The NPP shelved its parliamentary primaries for the constituency after opposition by some of its members to the former legislator going unopposed.

Asiamah Amoako contested as an independent candidate in the 2020 parliamentary election after he lost the party’s primaries.

He was expelled from the party following his decision, but despite the NPP establishment being against him, he was re-elected as the MP for Fomena.

According to a report by asaaseradio.com, top sources within the NPP have indicated that the party’s decision to make Asiamah Amoako its candidate is to mend its relationship with the Fomena MP.

The report also indicated that lawyer William Kusi, secretary of the Ashanti Regional NPP reconciliation committee, has corroborated the development.

Kusi is reported to have said that the party making the deputy speaker its parliamentary candidate is in its best interest.

“Asiamah is coming and it is so because we need to secure the seat. It is important for people to wait for others to go so that they can follow. And I am sure that whoever is nursing that ambition should not throw it away… But for the love of the party and the fact that we want to break the 8, there are certain things we have to do differently. What is most important is the victory,” he is quoted to have said.
