The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has emphasized the role of justice in preserving peace during the December 7, 2024, general elections.

Addressing the 24th General Assembly of the church at the Ramseyer Training Centre in Abetifi, Kwahu, on Saturday, August 17, 2024, themed "Celebrating Our Heritage: Persisting in Missions," the Moderator urged the Electoral Commission to be fair and fair in its constitutionally mandated duty of supervising a free, fair, and transparent election.

"It is important to stress that peace will thrive only in a state of justice. This is why we have called on the Electoral Commission to be fair, firm, and transparent in their operations. We also call on you, the political party leaders, to ensure that the public utterances are devoid of personal attacks, inciting and divisive language, and disinformation." The Moderator said.

He further called on the political parties to conduct issue-based campaigns devoid of violence.

"Our prayer is that the political campaigns would be conducted in a peaceful manner. If the political campaigns are meant to pitch ideas for us to know those who will serve our nation best, it is important that an issue-based campaign be conducted. Violence must not be promoted. Indeed, all of us look forward for the first time to violence-free elections, and for us, it is non-negotiable," Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye stressed.

His admonishing comes after the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), through its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, publicly stated the party will not sign any peace pact ahead of the December 7 general elections.

According to the NDC, its refusal to append its signature to a peace declaration is due to unresolved violence which led to some killings in Techiman in the 2020 elections.
