The 2024 West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has started with no cases of exam malpractice reported so far.
Before the exam began, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) expressed concern about reports of some school authorities attempting to assist students during the exam.
In a statement on August 19, 2024, the council said “Candidates in some parts of the country are being charged sums of money between Gh¢200.00 and Gh¢500.00 in order to receive assistance from invigilators. Supervisors at some centres are planning to assign teachers to invigilate subjects they teach and some schools have registered persons who are not their bona fide students.”
WAEC also issued a strong warning to school heads, supervisors, and invigilators to avoid such practices.
However, school authorities at some senior high institutions have been pleased with the conduct observed since the exam began.
Regarding malpractice, some school administrators stated that no such incidents have been reported.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb TV, an official from Delcam SHS stated, “this is the first major paper we are writing. As to malpractice, we have candidates from various places. When they are coming from the house, they are searched at the gate before they enter.
“For someone doing something in the hall, I’m not there since I’m not part of the WAEC team running the exams but if they arrest somebody, we will know but so far so good.”
The Headmaster of Faith Baptist Senior High School also confirmed that no cases of malpractice had been reported at his center, describing the process as smooth.
“So far, everything has been going smoothly, and we have not encountered any issues,” he mentioned.
Students completed the oral English paper on August 21, 2024, as the first core subject since the exam began.
