Tema, (Greater Accra) 11 Jan. '99,

Tema, (Greater Accra) 11 Jan. '99, A total of 205 couples out of 1,500 who filed papers to register their marriage under the ordinance at the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) in 1998 failed to turn up to legalise their relationships. Mr Joseph Torsu, Tema Municipal Marriage Registrar attributed this to various reasons including disagreements between families of the couples and breakdown in relationships between the couples themselves. Mr Torsu who was told newsmen that some of the ladies preferred lavish wedding ceremonies which their men could not afford. Some of the women also changed their minds at the last hour because they could not bear the frequent travelling and the non- residence status of their partners. Mr Torsu said there were also 12 divorce cases during the year mostly due to partners cheating on each other while some women felt they were superior to their husbands due to their wealth. A total of 738 couples performed their matrimonial ceremony at TMA mostly on week days with only 44 of them on Saturdays and Sundays. Five hundred and fifty seven other couples collected authority from the assembly for their weddings at the church. GRi
