More than 20 Ghanaians, from the Jema area in the Kintampo District, are said to have drowned at sea in their attempt to travel to Gabon to seek greener pastures.

Nana Asare Akomeah II, chief of Jema, who is also the Kyidomhene of the Nkoranza Traditional Area, made this known to the Ghana News Agency at Kintampo on Friday.

He said a reliable source confirmed the incident to relatives of the deceased about a fortnight ago.

Nana Akomeah said seven of the victims were from Jema, six from Cherehi and Bredi, and four each from Kokuma and Pamdu.

He said the source said the deceased, mainly young people, travelled to Nigeria a few months ago and decided to go to Gabon by sea when the incident occurred.

He appealed to the government to investigate the incident.

Nana Asare urged the government to create job opportunities for the youth to discourage them from undertaking such risky ventures.

He advised the youth to undertake income-generating activities as well as learn vocations to improve their living standards, as there is no better place than one's homeland
