214 school children were killed in accidents from January to September 2017 - NRSC

The National Road and Safety Commission is asking the 216 assemblies across the country to enforce their road safety bye-laws in order to protect lives on roads.

This is to eliminate entirely the increasing number of fatalities associated with road crashes.

According to the commission, 214 school children were killed in accidents from January to September 2017. The children who were either knocked down or died in road crashes were among the 1534 recorded in 2017.

The Head of Communication at the National Road Safety Commission, Kwame Kodua Atuahene in an interview with Citi FM, said that,” Five years ago, we tried to developed a scheme or opportunity that will allow road safety to be taught in school through the support of European union working with Ghana Education Service to developed texts books and manuals.”

Mr. indicated that, “We have also been deploying what we call the lollipop for kids also stationed at strategic zones where data shows that kid have difficult to cross from one point to other either from school or to their homes.”

”Many of cities and municipal areas and pedestrians walkways taken over by hawkers and traders and it is an issue we will tackle with the Municipalities, “he added.

He concluded that, “In this country the majority of people who died as a result of road crashes are not passengers; they are ordinary people who walk by the roadside.”
