22 before court for violating sanitation byelaws

Dambai (V/R), Sept. 9, GNA - The Krachi East District has embarked on stringent measures to promote clean environmental sanitation and was consequently prosecuting some 22 recalcitrant people for violating the bye laws on sanitation.

The 22 people, who are appearing before the Krachi West Magistrate Court were being charged for indiscriminate dumping of refuge, overgrowth of weeds and defecation at unauthorized places. Mr Joseph Dah, Krachi East District Environmental Health Officer, who disclosed this to newsmen at Dambai on Tuesday, said the exercise was relevant in view of the current deplorable environmental sanitation in the district, which was detrimental to healthcare delivery, would serve as deterrent to would-be polluters.

He said the district had therefore institutionalized general environmental health and sanitation itinerary for the district for its strict compliance.

Mr Dah said an amount of five million cedis was realized between July and August this year alone, for the arrest of stray animals with another five million cedis recorded for 2005.

He said spot fines accruing from indiscriminate defecation amounted to 950,000 cedis between April and August, this year. Mr Dah implored the communities to support the clean-up exercises as specified, saying, "cleanliness is next to Godliness".
