27-year-old contractor granted GH¢30,000 bail

A 27 year-old contractor, Isaac Ahale, has been granted GH¢30,000 bail by the Tarkwa circuit court, for issuing a false cheque which was dishonored.

He pleaded not guilty and will re-appear on May 29.

Prosecuting, Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah, told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the complainant Emmanuel Adjetey Adjei is a licensed money lender at Lowcost near Tarkwa and the accused resides at Cyanide in the same area.

He said on April 17, last year, the accused approached his friend Dennis Ackah, a witness in this case, to assist him to raise some money to execute a contract he had won.

Inspector Amponsah said Ackah then led the accused to the complainant where an amount of GH¢20,000 was given to the accused through his friend who deposited the money into his (accused) account.

He said as part of the agreement, the loan was to attract 20 per cent interest per month.

The accused after receiving the money failed to pay the interest and the principal amount for six months.

According to Detective Amponsah, on October 8, last year, the accused issued a cheque for an amount of GH¢30,000 to the complainant.

He said when the complainant presented the cheque to the UT bank that same day for withdrawal, the cheque was dishonored, and the complainant accordingly informed the accused of the situation at hand, but he did not show up.

The complainant, therefore, reported the incident to the Police, and this led to his arrest on October 24 last year.

He said on December 21, through the effort of the Police the accused made part payment of GH¢10,000, but he had since failed to refund the remaining amount.

The Prosecutor said on May 10, this year, a surety to the accused came to inform the Police that he was fed up with the accused’s attitude towards the case and he wanted to withdraw his surety.

He said the accused was re-arrested and charged with the offense of issuing a false cheque.
