Four persons, including a community police assistant and a teacher, who forced three senior high school students at Akomadan in the Ashanti Region to eat raw chicken they allegedly stole, have been arrested by the Police.
The three, who are students of the Akomadan SHS, had prepared the fowl they allegedly stole and were about to cook it in their hideout in the woods when they were arrested by the suspects.
A video of the incident showed the men threatening the students to eat the chicken raw to avoid the case being reported to their school authorities since that could lead to their expulsion.
The frightened students, two of who were handcuffed together by the community police assistant, then had no option but to eat the uncooked chicken. They were given water to drink in order to make the eating somewhat easy.
Police in the Ashanti Region said their attention was brought to the said video last Friday and their preliminary investigations revealed the incident happened at Akomadan.
The District Police Command was instructed by the Regional Police Command to conduct investigations into the case, leading to the arrest of the four suspects, including the community police assistant.
Ashanti Regional Police PRO, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, told our correspondent Kofi Adu Domfeh Monday that the suspects will after investigations arraign the suspects on charges of assault.
“We investigated that piece of video footage and it happened that it was coming from Akomadan so the Regional Police Commander tasked the District Commander to initiate investigations into alleged assault on these students” he said.
According to him, a number of suspects were picked up but “as we speak, four persons have been arrested and are in custody assisting in investigations.
“When you watch the video, you realise that two of the students were in handcuff so we then knew that it could either be a policeman involved or anybody else so when we investigated, it turned out that it was community police assistant. He’s also been picked and the commander,” he added.
ASP Ahianyo said during investigations, some names came up and the Police are doing everything possible to get those persons arrested.
Also, he said frantic efforts have since Friday been made to get the students for interview in order to build a docket and process the suspects for court.
“This morning the parents have been contacted and they have assured us they will bring them to the District Police Command for them to be interviewed or questioned then they will assist the Police in whatever investigations that we’ve already initiated into this video,” he stated.
Asked about what the police was going to do about the alleged stealing case against the three students, the Police PRO said they are juveniles hence the Police will be looking at what action to take against them.
“For now, those who subjected them to inhumane treatment, they are the people we are looking at,” he said, as he condemned the act by the suspect.
He said no matter the offence one commits, “We need not to put the law into our own hands”
On the issue of the community police assistant, ASP Ahianyo said the Police will contact the Youth Employment Agency authorities for them to commence internal disciplinary action against him while the Police pursue the criminal aspect.
