3 countries to study Ghana's road safety model

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) is playing host to counterpart lead road safety agencies from Ethiopia, Lesotho and The Gambia on a study tour of Ghana’s road management model.

“This follows the Economic Commission for Africa’s ranking of Ghana as the first out of 23 African countries to have implemented the most road safety action plans developed within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (DoA) initiative in 2015,” a statement available to ClassFMonline from the NRSC noted.

The release added: “Ghana was recognised as fully achieving this feat in the context of the national blueprint, the National Road Safety Strategy III (2011-2020) and the African Road Safety Action Plans.”

The visit by the African counterparts is to enable them learn and share from Ghana's experiences in road safety management to improve the road safety systems in their respective countries.

The focus of the visit will be on areas of road safety trend, data collection, enforcement, and post-crash response which are critical components of the Ghana model for road safety improvement.

Ghana’s road safety management model is one that relies heavily on data and research-led strategies to influence positive road safety measures. The NRSC, as the lead road safety agency, coordinates these efforts while it also leads a harmonised public sensitisation and advocacy efforts to improve knowledge among road users.

The study visit will take our guests to other road safety public sector agencies including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Police MTTD, the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI), Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), Department of Urban Roads (DUR), Department of Feeder Roads (DFR) and the National Ambulance Service (NAS).

It is expected that this visit will also serve as an opportunity to deepen the long-standing relationship between the countries.
