The Ghana Police Service, as part of its operations to combat drug-related crime, has arrested one person for the possession and suspected distribution of cannabis.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, led by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, said the suspect, a 39-year-old man, was arrested on Wednesday after claiming ownership of a private ambulance found to contain parcels of cannabis.

On September 10, 2025, the Accra Regional Police Command, acting on sustained surveillance, intercepted a Hyundai H100 private ambulance with registration number GX277-20 in front of Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami, Accra.

“The team arrested suspect Kwame Manenyi Wonder, aged 39, who was found standing beside the vehicle and claimed ownership of both the ambulance and its contents.

"A search of the ambulance uncovered quantities of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis concealed in sacks. Upon thorough investigation, the police found 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis,” she disclosed.

She further revealed that investigations established the vehicle had been loaded with the suspected narcotics in Kpando in the Volta Region and was destined for Accra for distribution to buyers.

“The suspect has admitted to engaging in this illegal activity since last year. Investigations have also established that the suspect originally purchased the vehicle as a regular car and later fitted it with a siren.

"Before acquiring the Hyundai H100, he used a Toyota Highlander for the same purpose, transporting illegal substances. He subsequently branded the current vehicle as an ambulance and, aside from using it for drug trafficking, also used it for transporting dead bodies,” Superintendent Obeng said.

She added that the vehicle has been impounded for evidential purposes, while arrangements are being made to forward the substances to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.

“The suspect is being processed for court while investigations continue,” she concluded.
