Accra, July 26, GNA - About 450 children of school-going age in Forsime; Dzroawode and Wukpo in the Abutia Traditional Area are not in school because there are no classrooms for them.
Also, efforts to get teachers to the community have been fruitless because the area was isolated.
This was made known by Mr Francis Aggrey Agbotse, NDC-Ho West, as he asked questions on education on the floor of the House on Wednesday. Papa Owusu Ankomah, Minister of Education, Science and Sports, in answer said the Ministry had been made aware of the situation adding that the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, the District Education Directorate and the District Education Oversight Committee would be requested to carry out their responsibilities by putting up the necessary infrastructure for the use of the children.
Papa Owusu Ankomah, however, said the initiative for the provision of infrastructure must come from the District Assembly, and announced that the Government was recruiting 6,000 pupil teachers to fill vacancies in schools in deprived areas.
He also announced that the United Kingdom Government had provided 105 million pounds support for basic education for the next 10 years. On the question of Ms Akua Sena Dansua, NDC-North Dayi, on what the Ministry was doing to establish a model secondary school in the Kpando District, Papa Owusu Ankomah said the Ministry would get in touch with the Kpando District Assembly to recommend a school in the District for consideration.
Ms Dansua had said that Peki Secondary School, which was picked for upgrading in the District, had now moved into the newly created South Dayi District.
To a question from Mr Francis Yaw Osei-Sarfo, NDC Krachi West, on whether the Ministry had plans to establish a secondary school in the Nchubrum Traditional Area, Papa Owusu Ankomah said there were no such plans.
He said, however, that the chiefs and people of the area could apply to the Volta Regional Office of the Ghana Education Service, subject to the requirements for consideration.
