Owuram (E/R), Aug 1, GNA - The government has secured a 5.8 million-dollar-loan for a Rural Electrification project for 31 communities in the West Akyem District of the Eastern Region. Mr Kwabena Sintim Aboagye, District Chief Executive (DCE), announced this at a durbar of the Chiefs and the People of Owuram, near Asamankese. He said the contractor would start work this month to connect the communities to the national grid by the end of year.

Mr Aboagye who stated that low-tension poles had already been sent to some of the beneficiary towns said four towns in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District would also enjoy the facility. He promised that the government would find a lasting solution to nation's energy crisis soon since it was aware of the negative impact the load-shedding exercise had on the people and the economy. The DCE noted that now that major industries including those in the mining sector were weaning themselves from the national grid from Akosombo power consumption would reduce to facilitate normal supply. Mr Aboagye said the energy saving bulbs imported by the government would be distributed to communities soon. He noted that bridges and school blocks had been constructed to improve the social life of the people and appealed to them to desist from erecting speed ramps themselves, but to seek approval and technical advice from the appropriate quarters.

The DCE urged parents and opinion leaders to educate children on how to cross roads to avoid being knocked down by vehicles and cautioned drivers plying the area to avoid speeding and wrong overtaking to prevent accidents.
